Salmon River Rafting

The name "Salmon" is a very popular one for rivers since before the white man, Salmon flourished in the rivers of the West. This causes confusion because four of the most popular river rafting trips are different Salmon Rivers.

These four Salmon Rivers are all designated by Congress as Wild and Scenic. They are all awesome, but here they are in order of "awesomeness."

The Middle Fork of the Salmon in Idaho

100 miles of Class III+

The Middle Fork is a five or six day wilderness rive trip through the largest contiguous wilderness area in the lower 48 states, the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness. It features fun whitewater, hot springs, clear water, world class trout fishing, and great hiking in a spectacular canyon. The Middle Fork is the best alpine river in the world.

The Main Salmon in Idaho

86 miles of Class III

The Main Salmon also flows through the Frank Church Wilderness. It is different from the Middle Fork because it has about twice the volume of water and the rapids are more spread out. In fact everything about the Main Salmon is bigger, the camps are on big sandy beaches, the rapids have bigger waves, and the canyon is bigger.

The Cal Salmon in California

20 miles of Class IV - V

The Cal Salmon is know as one of the best Class IV - V rivers in California. It has two distinct sections of river that make for the perfect whitewater weekend. It also has what all great rafting rivers should have: clear water, challenging rapids, and stunning scenery.

The White Salmon in Washington

5 - 7 miles of Class IV

Although the White Salmon is the fourth on this list, it is one of the best day trips in the country. It's full of whitewater rapids from start to end in an intimate canyon. Perhaps the best part of the trip is the opportunity to raft over a true waterfall, Husum Falls.
