Illinois River Natural History

Flora

Umbrella PlantThe Illinois River is best known for the Kalmiopsis Leachiana since the the Illinois flows through a Northern Corner of the Kalmiopsis Wilderness. It's a small purple plant endemic to Southern Oregon's Siskiyou Mountains.

Perhaps the most interesting plant is the Pitcher Plant or Cobra Lily. This is a carniverous plant that uses a symbiotic bacteria to digest it's prey and uses sticky hairs to trap them. Among the most striking flowers are the wild iris and the umbrella plants that grow near the river.
